Captiva Stars in ‘Sports Illustrated’ Swimsuit Issue
Fort Myers News-Press

It may not be front and center, but Captiva and Southwest Florida are sandy stars in the annual “Sports Illustrated” swimsuit issue.

“You can’t buy this kind of publicity,” gushed Ric Base, president of the Sanibel & Captiva Islands Chamber of Commerce. “People are going to look at that and hopefully say, ‘Oh my gosh, what a great spot that is.”

Sports Illustrated did a photo shoot of Christie Brinkley on Captiva for an issue that appeared in February 1981. That helped put Captiva on the map as a tourist destination, according to Daniel Smock, marketing and communications manager for South Seas Island Resort. Maybe folks at SI have a long memory, because a representative from the magazine made contact with the resort again last fall and arrangements were made.

 “T
he Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue is probably the most sought after single magazine of the year,” Smock said. “It doesn’t get any bigger than that. It’s great exposure for South Seas, great for the area.”

Captiva Cruises helped make some of the shoots possible, and transported everyone – about 10 people were part of the four-day shoot – to barrier islands including Cayo Costa.

They choose Captiva and Cayo Costa because of their natural beauty,” said Paul McCarthy, owner of Captiva Cruises, noting that most of those who came had not been here previously. “The fact that they choose to do the photo shoot here speaks volumes. The weather was beautiful, the photography was fantastic.”

Florida’s Housing Market Continues on a Steady Track

ORLANDO, Fla. – Feb. 23, 2015 – Florida’s housing market had higher median prices, more new listings and a continued stabilization of inventory in January, according to the latest housing data released by Florida Realtors®.

Closed sales of single-family homes statewide totaled 16,087 last month, up 10 percent over January 2014. “Home price gains in areas across Florida mean that home equity continues to improve and that, coupled with historically low interest rates, generates a great opportunity for sellers,” says 2015 Florida Realtors President Andrew Barbar.  Many homeowners who have been on the sidelines are now ready to list their properties for sale: Statewide, new listings for single-family homes in January rose 7.9 percent year-over-year, while new townhouse-condo listings rose 1 percent.”

Barbar noted that January marked the 38th month in a row that statewide median sales prices for both single-family homes and townhouse-condo properties rose year-over-year.

The major features of the market – prices and inventory – have settled into a path that will be characteristic of the whole year,” says Florida Realtors Chief Economist Dr. John Tuccillo.

According to Freddie Mac, the interest rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 3.67 percent in January 2015, down from the 4.43 percent average recorded during the same month a year earlier.

78th Annual Shell Festival
Sanibel Community House

Make plans now to attend The Annual Shell Festival! 2015 dates are: March 5, 6, and 7.

With their passion for the arts, Shell Crafters meet each week throughout the year to prepare for this event. They even teach a class at 10:30am every Monday, except in the month of March, when they take a much deserved break!

At the Shell Festival, 6th graders from The Sanibel School inform guests about various shells through aquariums filled with live shells. There is also a juried show with art and scientific divisions by the work of our local Shell Club. T

The extraordinary piece to this show is that it is entirely the product of volunteers from our community. Also, the Shell Tent sells shells from Sanibel and elsewhere. Food and beverage and lots more in store!
